Why personalised children's books suit families who live apart

Many UK families are spread out: grandparents in one town, grandchildren in another, an aunt abroad. Personalised children's books bridge that distance nicely, because the child does not just receive a present, they see themselves in it, often alongside the person who sent it.

Each book is written and illustrated from scratch around one child. You upload a clear photo, add their first name, and choose a story subject, a lesson and an illustration style. The pictures are illustrated with the help of AI from that photo, so the child in the book actually looks like your grandchild.

You can add up to five characters in total, each with their own photo. That is the part grandparents tend to love: Nan and Grandad can be in the story too, walking through the enchanted forest or waving the rocket off from the launch pad.

Gifting from afar: what you need before you start

If you are making the book for someone else's child, a quick message to mum or dad saves a lot of guesswork. Ask for:

  • One clear, recent photo of the child, with their face well lit and easy to see.
  • The name they actually use, spelt the way the family spells it.
  • Their current obsession, whether that is dinosaurs, unicorns, fire engines or space.
  • Anything sensitive going on at home, so the story subject lands well rather than awkwardly.

Then choose an age group: 0 to 2, 3 to 5, 6 to 9, or 10 and up. The amount of text on each page grows with age, so a three-year-old gets a short, rhythmic story and a nine-year-old gets a fuller read-aloud. For more on choosing by age and interest, see our buyer's guide to personalised books for kids.

The eBook can be shared by private link the moment it is ready, so even if the printed copy is still on its way, you can send the link on the day and read it together over a video call.

Choosing English (UK) as the book language

There are 25 book languages, and English comes in two versions: English (US) and English (UK). Choose English (UK) and the story is written with British spelling and wording, so it reads naturally to a child growing up here: colour, favourite, mum.

Every family has its own words, though. After the book is ready you can rewrite the text of any page, so you can change Grandma to Nana, Granny or Gran, swap in a pet's nickname, or add a line only your family will understand.

  • Bilingual family? You can choose another language for the book, such as Polish, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch or Hebrew.
  • Want both? A finished book can be copied or translated, so cousins in two countries can each have a version in their own language.

Delivery to the UK: timings and costs

The order comes in two steps, which is handy when you are buying from a distance.

  1. The eBook, $7.99. Ready to read in about 15 minutes after ordering: 12 to 13 fully illustrated story pages plus a cover, on any device, with a PDF download.
  2. The printed hardcover, $44.99 plus shipping. The eBook payment is deducted. It is printed only after you have checked every page.

Printing takes 3 to 10 working days, plus shipping. Shipping is charged per country, so check the cost for a UK address before you order. The free shipping offer for two or more hardcovers applies inside the EU, so it does not cover UK delivery. You can see how the hardcover and prices work on the pricing page.

The hardcover is a generous A4 size (8.3 x 11.7 inches) with a durable, matte laminated cover. You can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or Klarna, depending on your country.

For a birthday or Christmas, work backwards from the date: printing takes 3 to 10 working days plus shipping to the UK, and you will want a day or two to read the eBook and tweak a page. Allowing 3 to 4 weeks (more in December) is sensible.

Almost any moment works, but these are natural fits:

Birthdays

A story where the birthday child is the hero, with their party, their friends and their cake. Ideas in our personalised birthday book guide.

Christmas

A Christmas story to read on Christmas Eve, year after year. See our Christmas book guide, or go straight to the Christmas story subject.

Starting school

Reception is a big step. A story about the first day of school lets a nervous four-year-old rehearse the classroom, the new teacher and the walk home.

A new brother or sister

A gentle way to prepare an older child for the new baby, with both of them in the pictures. Our new sibling book guide explains how.

Mother's Day, Father's Day and Grandparents' Day

There are story subjects for each, and a grandparent can star in the book alongside the child. Other holiday subjects include Easter, Halloween, Hanukkah and Eid.

Making it feel like a family heirloom

The books that get treasured are usually the ones with small, true details. A few ideas:

  • Choose a lesson that suits the child right now. There are ten, including kindness, courage, sharing and perseverance.
  • Pick an illustration style that suits the mood: watercolour or pencil and crayon for a calm bedtime story, 3D animation or comic book for an adventure.
  • Add the family dog or a much-loved teddy as a character.
  • Add an extra made from the book's pictures, such as a greeting card, a colouring book, a canvas print or an audiobook QR page that goes inside the printed book.

Thinking of giving one as a present? Our personalised book gift guide has more ideas for every age.
