Personalized Books for Kids: How to Choose One They Will Love
Some personalized books become the one your child asks for every night; others get read twice and shelved. This guide covers what separates the two, and how to choose by age, interest and occasion.

What makes personalized books for kids worth keeping
Personalized books for kids range from a stock story with a name dropped into the text to a book written and drawn around one particular child. Both have their place, but they are not the same gift. If you mainly want to celebrate a name, our personalized name book guide covers that kind well.
When you want a book your child returns to, these are the things that tend to matter most:
- The child looks like themselves. Their face, hair and features appear in the pictures, not just their name on the page.
- There is a real story. A beginning, a problem, a brave or kind choice, and an ending that feels earned. Children notice when nothing happens.
- The text fits their age. A two-year-old needs a few words a page; a nine-year-old wants something closer to a chapter's worth of scene.
- The subject is theirs. Dinosaurs, space, a new puppy, a first day at school. Interest carries a book further than novelty.
- It is printed to be handled. A sturdy cover and a large format survive bedtime, car seats and siblings.

How to choose a personalized kids book by age
Age is the first choice to get right, because it decides how much text sits on each page and how complex the story can be. Custom Picture Books writes for four age groups:
0 to 2: a few words, big pictures
12 pages with 4 to 12 words a page. Think naming, pointing and repeating. For this age there is also a separate photo-story line, explained in our guide to personalized baby books.
3 to 5: short stories with a clear plot
13 pages with 20 to 35 words a page. Enough for a small adventure, short enough to finish before eyes close. Our page on personalized books for toddlers goes into this age in detail.
6 to 9: a proper read-aloud
13 pages with 40 to 60 words a page. Children this age can follow a twist, a joke and a moral, and early readers like spotting words they can read on their own.
10 and up: a story they can read alone
13 pages with 80 to 120 words a page. Older kids often enjoy a funnier or more grown-up adventure, or a story about something they are going through.
Between two age groups? If you will read it aloud, the older group gives them a richer story to grow into; if they will read it alone, the younger group keeps the text within reach.
Choosing by interest: start with what they already love
The easiest way to pick a subject is to listen for a week. What do they play, draw and talk about? There are 120 story subjects across eight themes: Fairy Tales, Adventure, Activities, Worlds, Holidays, Family, Educational and Feelings. You can browse every subject before you decide.
- For the obsessed: dinosaurs, pirates, mermaids, unicorns, a superhero, the fire department or a garbage truck.
- For a family moment: a new baby, moving house, a new pet, a sleepover.
- For a hard patch: being afraid of the dark, feeling jealous, tantrums, saying goodbye, being bullied, parents' separation.
- For a celebration: a birthday, Christmas, Hanukkah, Eid, Halloween or Easter.
Each story also carries one lesson, chosen from ten: friendship, courage, care for nature, love, perseverance, sharing, honesty, respect, kindness and curiosity. Pairing a favorite subject with the lesson you care about right now (sharing for a child with a new sibling, courage for a nervous one) gives the book a quiet purpose. For more combinations, see our story ideas.
Custom children's books with family, pets and favorite toys
A custom children's book does not have to star one child alone. You can add up to five characters in total, each with their own photo: a sibling, a grandparent, the family dog, or the stuffed rabbit that goes everywhere. Children are often most delighted by the supporting cast.
You also choose how it looks. There are ten illustration styles: 3D animation, watercolor, gouache, soft anime, clay animation, comic book, sticker art, pencil and crayon, paper collage and block world. A child who loves animated films may light up at 3D animation; a calmer bedtime book often suits watercolor or pencil and crayon.
Finally, pick the book language. There are 25, including English (US and UK), Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish and Hebrew, which helps bilingual families and grandparents abroad.
What you actually get when you order
Because every book is written and illustrated from scratch after you order, there is no free preview of the full book. That is why it starts with a small first step:
- Upload one clear photo of your child and add their first name.
- Choose the age group, theme, story subject, lesson, illustration style, lettering style and language.
- Order the eBook for $7.99. It is ready in about 15 minutes: 12 to 13 fully illustrated story pages plus a cover, readable on any device, shareable by private link and downloadable as a PDF.
- Read it through. You can rewrite the text of any page and ask for any picture to be redrawn.
- If you want it in print, order the hardcover for $44.99 plus shipping, with the eBook payment deducted.
The hardcover is large (8.3 x 11.7 inches) with a matte laminated cover, and it is printed only after you have checked every page. Printing takes 3 to 10 working days, plus shipping. The pictures are illustrated with the help of AI from your photo, then shaped by your edits. The details are on the hardcover and pricing page.
A few practical tips before you start
- Pick a photo where the face is clear. Good light, looking roughly toward the camera, no sunglasses or heavy shadows. Our guide to personalized books with a photo has more on this.
- Use the name your child actually answers to. If everyone calls her Lulu, a book about Louisa can feel like it belongs to someone else.
- Read the eBook aloud once before printing. Clunky lines are easier to hear than to see, and you can rewrite any page.
- Leave time for printing. Printing takes 3 to 10 working days plus shipping, so for a set date allow at least 3 to 4 weeks (more in December).
Buying for someone else's child? Ask a parent for the photo and the spelling of the name. Our personalized book gift guide covers the rest.
The photo is used only to illustrate the book. The AI services that draw it may not train on it or keep it; it is stored securely, never sold, and deleted on request.
